December 2011
The Mayor and City Council along with all City employees wish everyone a Blessed and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This year City Hall will be closed on December 23, 26 and 27 in observance of the Christmas Holidays. City Hall will also close for New Years’ Day on January 2, 2012.
2011 has been a year with great achievements for the City with the completion of the Fuller Park walking trail and boardwalk and the opening of the new Kilkenny Park on Lake Edger Brown.
Also the announcements of SASCO LLC and SG Tissue locating their new businesses within the City limits. These industries could employ up to 400 individuals when they reach their full operational potential.
We now move on to 2012 and the challenges it will bring. On January 9th the City Council will hold their first regular scheduled meeting of the New Year. Council would like to remind everyone that these meetings are opened to the public and encourage you to attend.
The City will be busy installing a new lift station and force main from the airport industrial Park to the force main located on SASCO property. SG Tissue will be sending approximately 1,000,000 of waste water to the City’s Waste Water Treatment Plant. This will now allow the waste water treatment plant to operate at approximately 60 % capacity which will make the plant more efficient.
The City of Barnwell Police Department has seen a substantial increase in counterfeit money over the last month. Individuals are passing the fake currency to businesses that are very busy with customers. Some of the counterfeit is decent quality so a simple cursory scan does not alert the cashier to the bogus money. Most businesses are relying on a counterfeit detection pen. Some of the “higher quality” counterfeit has been washed in a form of acid to remove the ink of a smaller denomination bill and reprinted with a higher denomination bill. When this technique is used the counterfeit detection pen will indicate the bill is authentic. Please be aware of this when accepting cash money. The Police Department and City Hall has a list of ways that you can detect counterfeit money. You may stop by either building or go on-line to our website at www.cityofbarnwell.com and look in the Police Department section for the information.
